What is Saline Tattoo Removal and how does it work?
Saline tattoo removal is a process that uses a saline solution to break up the pigment in your tattoo, effectively eliminating it. The saline solution is injected into the tattooed area using a small needle. The solution then breaks up the ink particles, causing them to fade away. The tattoo will gradually disappear over the course of several weeks. Saline tattoo removal is an effective way to remove unwanted tattoos, and it is generally well tolerated by most people. There are only a few side effects associated with this type of tattoo removal, and it is typically considered safe for all skin types.
This type of tattoo removal is a complex process that relies on osmosis to gradually draw the pigments in the skin to the surface. For this to happen, a needle is used to create tiny wounds in the skin through which the pigments can be released. The presence of these pigments triggers an osmotic reaction, whereby water moves into the skin cells and creates a swelling effect that causes the unwanted ink and pigments to move towards the surface of the skin. Over time, this process causes the tattoo to lighten significantly, eventually disappearing completely as the scabs heal and new, healthy skin takes its place. While it can take several sessions before complete fading occurs, proper care of the treatment area and prompt completion of each session are key factors in achieving success with tattoo removal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers
The process does not harm the body beyond creating a temporary wound. Only the area being treated is affected unless a severe infection occurs. Taking good care of the area afterwards is essential to prevent potential infection.
The Saline solution is a mix of salt and water and the salt helps to break down the ink while the water keeps the area hydrated, reducing irritation and promoting healing. Some brands of saline solution also include additional ingredients like aloe vera, which can further soothe the skin. While a saline solution is typically safe for most people, it is important to test it on a small area of skin before using it on a larger tattoo. This will help to ensure that you do not have any adverse reactions to the solution.
Saline tattoo removal and laser tattoo removal are two different methods for removing unwanted tattoos. For large or dark tattoos on the body, laser removal is generally considered the most effective option, with proven results and less risk of side effects or permanent damage. However, saline tattoo removal can often be a better choice for smaller or more delicate tattoos or those in locations where larger applications of laser treatment could be problematic, such as near the eyes or mouth. Unlike laser removal, which relies on heat to break down ink particles to eliminate the tattoo, saline tattoo removal depends on an injection-based process that physically breaks down the pigments in the skin. While this method may take longer for some colours like red and pink than for darker colours such as black and blue, saline tattoo removal is generally seen as safer and more effective overall due to its gentler approach. So if you’re considering a cosmetic tattoo but are worried about the potential consequences of removing it, later on, saline tattoo removal may be the better choice for you.
Achieving desired results with saline tattoo removal depends on many factors. How old is the tattoo? Was it microblading or a machine tattoo? How deeply has the pigment been implanted? Is the tattoo before or after laser treatment? The answers to these questions will help our technicians determine the best course of action for your individual case. In general, newer tattoos tend to be easier to remove than older ones, and machine tattoos are typically easier to remove than microblade ones.
Additionally, shallowly-implanted pigment is usually simpler to remove than deeply-implanted pigment. Tattoos treated with laser therapy may also respond differently to saline tattoo removal. Ultimately, there is no way to guarantee how many sessions will be needed to achieve the desired results. Some unwanted pigment will take one session, while others may take three or more. Our technicians will always advise you to budget for three sessions to give you the best possible chance of success. However, even with three sessions, some residual pigment may remain. If you have any questions or concerns about saline tattoo removal, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be happy to discuss your case and help you determine the best course of action.

Before the treatment
Preparation
- No eyelash extensions; they will need to be removed at least 7 days before initial treatment.
- No contact lenses; please leave them out for at least 2-3 days after the initial procedure.
- Do not take Aspirin or Ibuprofen at least 24h before and after treatment.
- Do not drink alcohol 24h prior to your treatment as well as no caffeine or energy drinks on the appointment day.
- Since delicate skin or sensitive areas may swell or redden, please consider this before making any social plans for the same or following day.
- No tinting, perming, threading or hair removal 7 days prior to the treatment.
- No botox, filler, chemical peel 30 days prior to the treatment.
- It is important to note that colour is much more intense for the first few days following the treatment. Eyeliner heals quickly and dry pigmented skin peels off by itself after a few days. Over the next 3-5 weeks, the colour appears and stabilizes in the skin. Therefore, we will plan additional pigmentation after a minimum of 30-45 days, but not later than 2-3 months.
